Their distinctive red hue is derived from the presence of chromium, which differentiates them from sapphires that can occur in a range of colours. Both rubies and sapphires share the same basic properties as corundum gems, yet it is the striking red colour that sets rubies apart and makes them highly desirable. Rubies are renowned for their exceptional hardness, ranking at 9 on the Mohs scale. This places them just below diamonds, which are the hardest known natural material with a rating of 10. This makes them highly durable and resistant to scratching, which is why they are a perfect choice for everyday wear in jewellery.
